Quick answer
Why is my card declined on Claude, and how else can I pay?
Your card is declined on Claude when it is not a credit or debit card Anthropic accepts, when its billing address does not match your country, or when your bank refuses the payment. Anthropic takes no PayPal or Venmo. As of 29 October 2026, the other route is the Claude app: Claude Pro costs $20.00 in the US App Store, payable with an Apple Gift Card bought with crypto on AISubswithCrypto.
Claude payment rules at a glance
| Accepted on the web | "We accept credit cards and debit cards for all purchases." (Anthropic, read 22 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Not accepted | Third-party processors "such as PayPal or Venmo" |
| Address rule | The billing address must match the country you subscribe from |
| In the iPhone and Android apps | "your payment is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play" |
| Claude Pro, US App Store | $20.00 a month, the same as the web |
| Claude Max 5x, US App Store | $124.99 a month, against $100 on the web (+25%) |
| Gift subscriptions | "currently unavailable to purchase" |
| Crypto | Anthropic lists none; AISubswithCrypto sells the Apple and Google Play cards, for BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC |
What does Anthropic say causes a declined card?
Anthropic's card-decline article, updated 10 July 2026, gives three rules. It accepts credit and debit cards only. It does not accept third-party processors such as PayPal or Venmo. And it asks you to make sure the card's billing address matches the country you subscribe from.
A prepaid card is a grey zone. Anthropic's Team plan FAQ accepts "credit, debit, or prepaid cards", but the Pro and Max billing pages name credit and debit cards only.
Where you are also counts. One Anthropic list, the Supported Regions Policy, covers Claude.ai, Claude Code and the API. Anthropic does not offer Claude outside it, whatever card you use.
Why does my bank refuse a payment to Claude?
Because many banks cap or re-check foreign and recurring payments, and Claude Pro is both. Two rules from our research explain many refusals:
- India: recurring card payments, "domestic or cross-border", need a registered e-mandate. They run without extra authentication up to ₹15,000 per transaction.
- Nigeria: naira cards carry foreign-spending caps, such as $500 a month at First Bank and Wema since July 2025.
The full country list (Bangladesh, Argentina, Türkiye, Indonesia, Vietnam and Russia) is on our ChatGPT card-declined page. Russian cards fail abroad, and Anthropic does not serve Russia.
What should I check before I try again?
Check the four things Anthropic and banks look at, in this order:
- Card type: a credit or debit card, not PayPal, Venmo or a wallet balance.
- Billing address: in the same country as you.
- Bank settings: online, international and recurring payments allowed, with room under any foreign cap.
- Your country: on Anthropic's supported list.
If all four pass and the card still fails, ask the bank whether it saw the attempt. No attempt on the bank's side means the checkout refused the card, and only a different method fixes that.
Can I pay for Claude Pro through the App Store or Google Play instead?
Yes. In the Claude iOS app, "Upgrade to Pro" in Settings is an in-app purchase, and Anthropic says that for app subscriptions "your payment is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play". Apple says a gift-card balance can pay "subscriptions to apps from the App Store" and tries the balance before any card.
The store rules still apply:
- Country: A card works only with an Apple Account or Google account of the same country as the card, and an App Store or Google Play subscription renews from that balance only while it lasts.
- Exceptions: Apple says "Some subscriptions might not be charged to your Apple Account balance", and Google that "Some subscriptions do not accept Stored Value." Anthropic's help does not name gift-card balance either way.
- Enough balance: when the balance is short, Apple charges your primary payment method instead, so the declined card is tried again.
- One plan at a time: Anthropic documents moving from the App Store to the web, not the reverse. End a web plan before you subscribe in the app.
Claude Pro monthly costs $20.00 in the US App Store, the same as the web. Annual Pro costs $214.99 against $200 on the web (+7.5%), and Max 5x $124.99. Both cost more than any single US card we sell (US$25, US$50, US$100), so they take several codes redeemed to one balance.
What does Claude Pro cost in the App Store outside the US?
More than in the US in most countries. According to AISubswithCrypto's price check of 29 October 2026, Claude Pro monthly cost a median US$24.14 across the 38 App Store storefronts that sell it, against $20.00 in the US. 31 storefronts charged more than the US in dollar terms. Cheapest storefront: Pakistan, US$17.68. Dearest: Colombia, US$31.74.
Method: USD values computed by AISubswithCrypto from the local App Store price at the Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP, Poland's central bank) rates of 28 October 2026; US and Canadian App Store prices exclude sales tax, other storefronts include it.
In India, Claude Pro costs ₹ 1,999 in the App Store, and a ₹2,000 Apple card covers one month. Our Apple cards cover a month of Claude Pro in 26 of those storefronts. Prices for every country are on the Claude Pro price page.
Does a gift card help if Claude is not available in my country?
No. A gift card changes how you pay, not where Anthropic offers Claude. Anthropic's Supported Regions Policy, read on 22–23 October 2026 and labelled "Effective Nov 12, 2026", leaves out China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Yemen. Afghanistan, Myanmar and Yemen are on OpenAI's list but not on Anthropic's.
The Claude app is not even sold in the Hong Kong App Store: the page returned an error in our 29 October check.
No card on AISubswithCrypto works around this. We do not help anyone change their account country to pay a lower regional price. Not sold to Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Russia, Belarus, Syria, Yemen, mainland China or Western Sahara; orders of Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai cards are paused. Press reports from October 2026 describe Claude account bans in Russia and Hong Kong after VPN connections.
