Quick answer
Why is my card declined on ChatGPT, and how else can I pay?
Your card is declined on ChatGPT when OpenAI's checkout or your bank refuses it. OpenAI requires a card issued by a bank in a supported country, and banks in countries such as India and Nigeria restrict foreign recurring payments. As of 29 October 2026, you can pay instead with UPI, Pix, GCash, GoPay or MoMo, or with an App Store or Google Play card bought with crypto on AISubswithCrypto, from US$25.

What does OpenAI say causes a declined card?
OpenAI's help pages tie a decline to two things: where the card was issued and where you are. Its billing article says the card "must be issued by a bank located in one of those supported regions". A card from a bank outside the list fails even when it has funds.
The same rule covers renewals. OpenAI's renewal article says payments "may be declined if either party is outside of the supported regions": you or the card. Its page on unsupported countries adds that paying with methods from outside the list results in being blocked from its services.
OpenAI's country list, read on 22 October 2026, leaves out China, Hong Kong, Macao, Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba and Venezuela. For the API only, OpenAI states that prepaid cards cannot buy API credits. The ChatGPT articles we read set no prepaid rule for Plus.
Why does my bank decline a payment to ChatGPT?
Because many banks cap or re-check foreign and recurring card payments. Our research found these country rules:
- India: the RBI's e-mandate framework covers "domestic or cross-border" recurring payments. They run without extra authentication up to ₹15,000 per transaction, with a notice at least 24 hours before each debit. A subscription with no registered e-mandate fails.
- Nigeria: in 2022–23 banks cut foreign limits on naira cards to as low as $20 a month. By July 2025 they were back with caps, such as $500 a month at First Bank and Wema.
- Bangladesh: online international card use is limited to approved purposes, with a $300 cap per transaction (2020 rule).
- Argentina: a 30% "percepción" applies to subscriptions paid in pesos. It is a surcharge, not a decline.
- Türkiye, Indonesia, Vietnam: forum users report refusals with local virtual cards, with GoPay and with Vietnamese Visa cards.
Russian cards are a separate case. Visa said in 2022 that they "will no longer work outside the country", and OpenAI does not serve Russia.
What should I ask my bank before I try again?
Ask why it refused the payment, then fix that one thing. Five questions cover most cases:
- Is the card enabled for online and international payments?
- Is there a foreign-spending cap, and how much of it is left?
- Does the card accept recurring payments (in India, an e-mandate)?
- Was the card issued in a country on OpenAI's supported list?
- Did the payment reach the bank at all? If the bank saw no attempt, the checkout refused it, and only another method fixes that.
Which other payment methods does ChatGPT accept?
Cards everywhere, regional methods in eight markets, and Apple or Google billing inside the apps. OpenAI's multi-currency billing article listed these on 22 October 2026; the checkout shows which ones your account gets.
| Method | Where | What it pays |
|---|---|---|
| Debit or credit card | All supported countries | Web checkout |
| UPI | India | Go and Plus on the web |
| GoPay | Indonesia | Web checkout |
| Pix | Brazil | Web checkout |
| Kakao Pay, Naver Pay | South Korea | Web checkout |
| GCash | Philippines | Web checkout |
| MoMo | Vietnam | Web checkout |
| Link bank debit | UK and EEA | Web checkout |
| ChatGPT wallet (OpenAI gift card) | United States | Web plans and credits; not App Store or Google Play plans |
| Apple Account balance or card | Every App Store where the app is sold | Plans bought in the iPhone app |
| Google Play balance or card | Where Google Play takes balance for the plan | Plans bought in the Android app |
OpenAI's list names no method for Nigeria, Pakistan or Kenya, no PayPal and no crypto.
Can I pay ChatGPT Plus with an App Store or Google Play card instead?
Yes, if you subscribe inside the ChatGPT app. OpenAI says "Apple App Store subscriptions are managed by Apple", so Apple takes the payment, not OpenAI. Apple says a gift-card balance can pay "subscriptions to apps from the App Store", and it tries the balance first.
Three rules decide whether it works:
- Country: A card works only with an Apple Account or Google account of the same country as the card, and an App Store or Google Play subscription renews from that balance only while it lasts.
- Exceptions: Apple notes that "Some subscriptions might not be charged to your Apple Account balance". Google says "Some subscriptions do not accept Stored Value." No AI vendor names gift-card balance in its help.
- One platform: if you already pay on the web, OpenAI says you "must first cancel your subscription on the same platform where you originally started it."
In India, Plus costs ₹ 1,999 in the App Store, and a ₹2,000 Apple card covers one month. In Brazil it costs R$ 99,90, covered by a R$100 card. The App Store redemption guide shows each screen.

Exact crypto amount per order in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC; the invoice is valid 30 minutes. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no email required, up to US$1,000 per order.
Redeem the code
The code appears in your account within 24 hours of payment confirmation. Redeem it in the App Store or Google Play, on your own account.
Subscribe in the app
Open the ChatGPT app, choose Plus and confirm. Apple or Google charges the balance first.
Where does the gift-card route not help?
In most of the countries where cards fail most often. According to AISubswithCrypto's price check of 29 October 2026, our research documents card limits, surcharges or reported refusals in 6 countries where ChatGPT Plus is on sale in the App Store: India, Nigeria, Argentina, Türkiye, Indonesia and Vietnam. AISubswithCrypto sells an in-stock Apple card that covers a month in one of them: India. Method: each country's App Store price for Plus, matched against the card values we stock that day.
In Nigeria, Plus costs ₦ 31,500.00 (US$23.46) in the App Store, but we sell no Nigerian Apple card. Apple card orders are paused for these countries: Indonesia, Türkiye. A card from another country does not work: Apple's US terms say a US card "can only be linked to an Account in the United States".
A gift card also changes nothing about where ChatGPT is offered. Not sold to Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Russia, Belarus, Syria, Yemen, mainland China or Western Sahara; orders of Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai cards are paused. We do not help anyone change their account country to pay a lower regional price. The official ChatGPT card is for US accounts only; see the ChatGPT gift card page.
Questions about declined cards on ChatGPT
Why does ChatGPT say "Payment was not approved"?
Users report this message when the checkout or the bank refuses a payment, including with GoPay in Indonesia (OpenAI forum, June 2026). The causes are the ones above: a card from an unsupported country, a bank limit on foreign or recurring payments, or a method your account is not offered.
Why was my ChatGPT Plus renewal declined?
OpenAI says renewal payments "may be declined if either party is outside of the supported regions". A new foreign-spending cap or a missing e-mandate also stops a renewal. In the App Store, Apple charges your balance first, then your primary payment method.
Can I use a prepaid or virtual card for ChatGPT?
OpenAI says prepaid cards cannot buy API credits; the ChatGPT articles we read set no such rule for Plus. Google Play lists virtual credit cards as unsupported. A gift card redeemed in the App Store or Google Play leaves the card question to the store.
Can I pay ChatGPT with crypto directly?
No. OpenAI lists no crypto method (read 22 October 2026). The indirect route is an Apple or Google Play card bought with crypto on AISubswithCrypto, then a subscription in the app. See does ChatGPT accept crypto.
Is it safe to pay someone to subscribe for me?
Not if they need your login. OpenAI's terms forbid sharing your account credentials. We never sell, share or rent ChatGPT, Claude or other AI accounts, and we never ask for your login or password. More on the risks of bought accounts.
