Does a US App Store card work on an account from another country?
No. A card works only with an Apple Account or Google account of the same country as the card, and an App Store or Google Play subscription renews from that balance only while it lasts.
Apple's US terms say a US card "can only be linked to an Account in the United States" and works only for US purchases. The French terms say the same for France. For the UK: Apple Gift Cards purchased in the United Kingdom can only be linked to a United Kingdom Apple Account and used for United Kingdom purchases. The current email Apple Gift Card covers eligible Apple products, apps and services; product-only legacy cards have different uses.
Switching your Apple Account to another country is not a quick fix. Apple asks you to "spend any remaining Apple Account balance" and to cancel subscriptions that block the change first. We do not help anyone change their account country to pay a lower regional price. One crypto seller's page claims a US card "can be redeemed globally" after switching to a US Apple ID; Apple's terms tie it to US accounts and US purchases.
What does an Apple Account balance pay for?
Apple's rules state that an Apple Account balance pays apps, Apple services and third-party app subscriptions: "Or pay for subscriptions to apps from the App Store." The balance includes redeemed Apple Gift Cards and App Store & iTunes cards.
Three rules matter before you buy:
- Some subscriptions are excluded. "Some subscriptions might not be charged to your Apple Account balance." Apple does not list them.
- A card on file can be required. "Some purchases might require that you have a credit card on file."
- The balance is yours alone. "Funds that you add to your Apple Account balance are available only to you", even with Family Sharing.
Apple charges the balance first: it "attempts to use your Apple Account balance to cover the full amount". If the balance is short, Apple tries your primary payment method, then the others. No AI vendor names the Apple balance in its own help; the rule above is Apple's. Which plans this pays: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro, SuperGrok.
